Discrimination diaries. October 2014.

  • Two guys said to my friend "Why would you want to hang around with a girl in a wheelchair?"
  • Wanted to just go out and have a good time with my friends at a local club, got to the venue and was met by two flights of extremely steep stairs. Got to the top (after being carried) and found there were no toilets upstairs...couldn't relax. So within half an hour of arriving, i left in tears.
  • Turning up at the train station, wanting to head to Manchester for the afternoon/evening and was criticised by a platform attendant for not "booking in advance". Able bodied people have the option to book in advance, but don't always. Why should we? I only decided it'd be a good idea to go to Manchester on the train at lunch time, and yet national rail expect us to give them 48 hours notice. How is this equal? How is this inclusive?
  • Getting on the bus back to Manchester to catch the train home with my friend who is also in a wheelchair, I was told that we both can't get on because it is breaking the law. We were given no alternative i.e. Stagecoach did not offer to pay for our taxi fare. I ran off, so upset, angry and frustrated. The bus driver was arrogant saying things such as "i am not prepared to break the law" with his arms folded. (power stance) After a lot of arguing, while i was away wondering whether or not to push myself in front of traffic, A man from arriva stuck up for us and we were give "special" permission to ride the bus together.
